New Recruits and Lateral Hires

Huddleston Bolen has enjoyed steady, sustained growth over the past several decades. With 50 lawyers, we are capable of handling the complex needs of our clients while retaining the atmosphere of a small law firm. To accomplish this goal, we are committed to recruiting, and retaining, associates capable of helping us meet that commitment. We look to hire new associates who have not only achieved academic success, but who also show compatibility, character and a commitment to the communities we serve.

Because we have a diverse civil litigation and commercial practice, we routinely have employment opportunities in all practice areas. New associates are generally assigned to a practice area compatible with his or her interests while considering the needs of the Firm. We remain flexible, however, to allow all of its attorneys to explore various areas of practice.

We offer competitive starting salaries for new associates. Associates also typically receive a year end bonus, based upon the Firm's profitability, hours billed and seniority. Year end bonuses, if any, are subject to the discretion of the Firm's management. In addition to salary and bonus, we provide a standard medical benefits package, life insurance and extremely competitive, if not unparalleled, retirement plan. The Firm's "HR-10" plan for employees currently pays an amount equal to 10% of gross salary into a retirement fund after an employee has been with the Firm two years. There is no required employee matching component to this retirement plan so the Firm exclusively funds the plan for its associates. Voluntary dental insurance coverage is also available through our dental program.

The Firm pays for the West Virginia Bar Examination Application Fee, the fee for the standard bar review course and the applicable state bar association dues. We also pay for the costs and expenses associated with continuing legal education necessary to maintain an associate's law license in West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. Most of our new associates start work in May and receive their full compensation while studying for the bar exam, provided they work one-half of the normal expected hours through the completion of the bar examination. A limited moving-expense reimbursement is also provided.

Typically, an associate may be considered for partnership after seven and one-half years. There may be exceptions to this in cases where associates come to the Firm with significant legal experience. Associates are expected to bill 1,800 - 2,000 hours per year.

In addition to recruiting recent law school graduates, we also pursue the hiring of well-qualified practicing lawyers. In those cases, the salary for lateral hires is dependent upon the applicant's prior work experience.
